Will God Hear My Prayer? – Part 1

(I John 5:14-15)

Introduction:

   * Men have discussed for years whether or not God hears the “sinner’s prayer.”

   * God “hears” it in that He knows a man is uttering it (Prov. 5:21; Jer. 23:24; Heb. 4:13).

   * Real question: Does God respond to any prayer of the non-Christian?

   * Old Testament full of examples of prayerful men. Prayer is special form of ________________ from man to God.

   * Gen 4:26 –

   * People fall into 1 of 3 categories:

1. The Alien Sinner.

   * All who haven’t obeyed the Gospel. Forgiveness only in Christ (Col. 1:14; Rom. 3:24&6:23; II Tim. 2:10; Eph. 1:3).

   * Those not immersed into Christ are alien sinners (Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3-4; Acts 2:38; 22:16).

   * Paul references them in Eph. 2:12 –

   * Hearing sermon/plan of salvation not enough (II Thess. 1:8-9). The church is the body (Eph. 1:22-23; Col. 1:18).

2. Those who have fallen from grace (Gal. 5:4).

   * “Once saved always saved” just a dangerous lie:

      - Heb. 10:26-29 –

      - II Peter 2:20 –

3. Faithful children of God: Christians.

   * Christians have “purified their ________________ in obeying the truth” (I Pet. 1:22-23). They’ve been “___________

      ________________” (Jn. 3:3). They “walk ___________________________________ as He is in the light (I Jn. 1:7).

   * Rom. 3:24 –

   * Christians alone enjoy all spiritual blessings (II Tim. 2:10; Eph. 1:23).

   * Whose prayers will God hear? A faithful Christian’s (Jas. 5:16ff; I Thes. 5:16-18; Num. 11:2; Jdg. 13:8-9; I Chron.

      4:10; Acts 4:24-31; Prov. 15:29; Ps. 34:15). * Also those of erring Christian who wants to return (Jas. 5:16), but not

      those of one who is hardened and has no desire to be obedient (Isa. 59:1-2).

   * The penitent erring Christian can pray to God for forgiveness.

      - King David did (II Sam. 12:1-15; Psalm 51).

      - Simon the Sorcerer instructed to (Acts 8:22).

4. We must pray according to God’s will.

   * I Jn. 5:14-15 –

   * We must ask for things in accordance w/His will. Ex. – food, shelter, clothing, comfort in trial, wisdom, deliverance.

   * God will answer prayers of His children, both faithful & erring/penitent. He does not lie (Titus 1:2; Heb. 6:18).

   * Answers are either “yes,” “no,” or “not now.”

   * What about the alien sinner’s prayer? Bible is explicit in that God doesn’t respond to prayers from sinners.

      - Prov. 15:29 –

      - Psalm 66:18 –

      - Prov. 15:8-9 –

      - Psalm 34:15-16 –

   * John 9:31 – Was this blind man inspired? No, but the Bible writer was. Not uncommon (Gen. 3:4; Job 23:2).

   * Therefore, truth of statement stands. God doesn’t hear (respond to) the prayers of sinners – those outside Christ (Job.

      27:7-10).
