The Glory of Heaven – Part 1

(Rev. 12:1-8)

Introduction:

   * No human has been to Heaven and returned (II Cor. 12:1-10).

   * Man either continues after death or he doesn’t.

   * If no Heaven or Hell exists after death, then why bother living righteously?

1. The Bible testifies to the existence of Heaven.

   * Abraham knew something of Heaven (Heb. 11:9-16).

   * Moses expected the “recompense of reward” (Heb. 11:24 & following).

   * David knew he’d one day see his dead baby son (II Sam. 12:23).

   * Jesus spoke of Heaven:

      - Matt. 5:10-12 –

      - Matt. 6:19-21 –

      - John 14:2-3 –

   * Heaven promised to those who follow Christ (Phil. 3:20-21; I Peter 1:3-5).

2. Consider the nature of Heaven. Man has perverted it!

   * Islamic heaven – Virgins await men. Most of hell’s souls are women.

   * Mormon heaven – 3 levels of heaven:

      - Celestial –

      - Terrestrial –

      - Telestial

   * Very few in hell (Mt. 25:46).                                                                     Later, Smith denied existence of hell.

3. No Heaven for atheists.

   * Atheists believe that like Rover, we’re “dead all over.” They deny the existence of God, a soul, Heaven or Hell, etc.

   * If nothing exists after death, then what’s the difference between Hitler and the exterminator?

4. What is Heaven really like?

   * God is a spirit – not physical (Jn. 4:24). Heaven is spiritual.

   * A spirit is not: ________________________________________________________(Luke 24:39; Mt. 16:17).

   * Anthropomorphism helps us understand God (Isaiah 53:1; 59:1; Heb. 4:13). Our minds are limited (I Cor. 2:10).

   * Senses of “heaven” – realm of birds (Gen.1:26; Mt. 8:20), weather (Gen. 8:2; Jas. 5:18); outer space (Gen. 1:14; 22:17).

   * Also the Heaven where God lives (Deut. 10:14; Matt. 6:9; II Cor. 12:2).

   * Figures of speech that represent Heaven:

      - City –

      - Country –

      - House/place –

      - Temple –

      - Throne –

      - Glory –

      - Kingdom –

      - Holy City, new Jerusalem –
