One Of Our Three Greatest Needs – Hope – Notes/Study Sheet

(Heb. 11:1)

Introduction:

   * Characteristics of faith – 1) based on evidence. 2) Is obedient (Jas. 2:18 & 26). 3) Knowledge & faith can coexist.

   * Heb. 11:1 -

1) The hope of immortality.

   * Job (Job 14:7&14) –

   * Post-death existence is real (Luke 16).

   * Preparation must be made (II Cor. 5:10).

   * Even skeptics want to believe in an immortal existence. Robert Ingersoll:

   * Jesus’ resurrection our hope of living in Heaven (Rev. 1:18; I Cor. 15:20&23).

   * Jn. 5:28-29; Acts 24:15 –

   * II Tim. 1:10 –

2) Christians have hope in Christ.

   * I Thess. 4:18 –

   * Rom. 15:4 –

   * I Thess. 4:13&14 – 1) Sleep. Soul doesn’t “sleep,” body does (Dan. 12:2; Jn. 11:11, 43, 44). Death of body temporary (I

      Cor. 15; Jn. 5:28-29; Acts 24:15). 2) We don’t sorrow to the same extent as those w/o hope. Hope belongs to New

      Testament Christians – those in Christ - no one else (Col. 1:18&24). Those dead in Christ are happy (Rev. 14:13). I

      Thess. 4:14,16&17). In Christ through immersion (Acts 2:38; Gal. 3:26-27). 3) Jesus died & rose again (I Thess. 4:14)

3) Christians have hope of salvation.

   * Helmet of salvation (Eph. 6:17). Helmet – “around the head” (Isa. 59:17).

   * One theme of Ephesian letter – guard the salvation you found at baptism (Mk. 16:16; Eph. 5:26).

   * Why say this if we can’t lose our salvation? (I Cor. 10:12; Heb. 2:3).

   * I Thess. 5:8 –

   * Rom. 8:24-25 –

   * How do we both have salvation and yet hope for it? Baptism washes away our past sins (Acts 22:16; I Pet. 3:21). We

      await (hope for) a home in Heaven – the final reward (I Thess. 5:8; Rom. 13:11; II Tim. 2:10; I Pet. 1:5; II Tim. 4:18).

4) The hope of Heaven anchors the soul.

   * Hope in God: things will turn out well and will make sense, if not today, then someday (Rom. 2:5).

   * Col. 1:5 –

   * Col. 1:4 –

   * Heb. 6:19 –

   * Hope is confident expectation.

   * God’s promises instill the faithful w/confidence (I Pet. 1:4; I Jn. 5:13).

   * Hope of resurrection (Acts 23:6) –

   *Resurrection is victory over death! (Rom. 8:23; I Cor. 15:50-58).

   * Hope of righteousness = total conformity to God’s will (Gal. 5:5).

   * Col. 1:23 –

   * Rom. 5:2 –

   * Titus 2:13 –

   * I Thess. 5:8 –

   * Eph. 1:18 –

   * Titus 1:2 –

   *“God of hope” (Rom. 15:13) “living” (I Pet. 1:3), “blessed” (Tit. 2:13) “good” (II Thes. 2:16) hope, through“patience

       and comfort of the scriptures” (Rom. 15:4). Colossians 1:27, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

   * Stick with Christ (Col. 2:6).

Dear soul, if you have no hope of a heavenly home in your current state, then why not change it today?
