Going The Second Mile

(Mt. 5:38-42)

Introduction:

†† * Roman soldiers could require Jews to carry their goods for one mile under law.

†† * Matt. 5:39-41 Ė

††††† - Donít retaliate against those who insult you.

††††† - If someone sues and takes your tunic, give them your cloak, too.

††††† - If someone persuades you to go a mile, go two.

†† * Christians should be willing to go a second mile in many areas.

1. Bible study.

†† * 1st mile Ė Do it. Study the word (II Tim. 2:15) Ė

†† * 2nd mile Ė teach others (Heb. 5:12-14); teach others who can teach others (II Tim. 2:1-2).

††††† - teach by word and example (I Tim. 4:12).

††

2. Worship.

†† * 1st mile Ė Assemble every time! (Acts 20:7; Heb. 10:24-25). Itís not just an obligation, itís a privilege!

††††† - We miss out on chances to: give (I Cor. 16:1-2), sing (Col. 3:16), hear preaching (Acts 20:7), pray (Jas. 5:16), and

††††† observe the Lordís Supper (Matt. 26:26-28) Ė if we choose not to be here or put another activity first.

†† * 2nd mile Ė Seek the kingdom first! (Matt. 6:33).

†† * 2nd mile Christians found in II Cor. 8:3-4.

3. Sin.

†† * 1st mile is seeking forgiveness (I Jn. 1:9; Heb. 4:16).†† We will sometimes fall short (Rom. 3:23).

†† * 2nd mile Ė Forsake sin! (Rom. 6:1-2). Christians died to it! Avoid it!

†† * Godís grace will help cover sin, but is not a license to go out and commit it! (Rom. 6:15).

†† * Fight it every day. Man canít serve two masters (Mt. 6:24).

†† * Be like David (Ps. 101:3).

4. Forgiveness.

†† * 1st mile Ė Luke 17:3&4. Forgive the penitent wrongdoer. We often canít ďlet it go,Ē but we must.

†† * Godís not expecting something He isnít willing to do (I Jn. 1:7-9).

†† * 2nd mile Ė Matt. 18:21-22 Ė Continue offering genuine forgiveness when itís sought.

†† * We must forgive others if we want Godís forgiveness (Mt. 6:14-15).

5. Love.

†† * 1st mile - Mt. 5:43. We should love our neighbor, and thatís often easy to do.

†† * 2nd mile Ė Love your enemies, too (Mt. 5:44 Ė 47).

†† * Godís not asking us to do something He wonít do (Mt. 5:45).

††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††† R.W. McAlister6/6/10 p.m.
